My coffee hating brother-in-law Ray wrote a blog entry called “Applied Truth” that is sort of a continuance of these great family ponderings (isn’t this fun?). He made the comment that one of things he hated in the KJV debate is that “we spend so much time fighting over something that really doesn’t matter that much.” And he also made the comment that if caught up in the whole debate, you miss some great applied truth. And that hits the nail on the head! I think it’s fun to debate these issues, or to just study them. I think it helps you have a deeper understanding of these things. But God does not want us to be split over such petty things like which versions are you using. I was in a church when I was a kid (the church in Illinois, not Washington) that treated other versions like they were Satanic literature. Seriously, the pastor had other versions in his study, but he had them upside down on the shelf, and he had scribbled all over the covers phrases like “this book is NOT the Word of God”. Yikes. As a kid, I can remember hearing sermons about the evils of non-KJV bibles, wearing shorts, VHS tapes, women wearing pants, CCM, Santa Claus, cartoons, “mixed bathing” (guys and girls swimming together). I even remember being told that only guys are supposed to swim with guys, but that even then we shouldn’t take our t-shirts off. I refer to that church as the “Freaky Fundamentalist Church.” Those unimportant issues are all I can remeber being taught in that church. And they really missed out on some great truth! When I finally became a Christian, it took a long while for God to de-program me from that mess. There are times where I still feel slightly guilty if I use another version besides KJV (which I do all the time now) and if I wear shorts (which I also do alot). I know, it doesn’t make sense, but that’s how good their brainwashing is!
People are seeking the truth, even athiests! Just look at our contemporary culture, and you can’t miss it. I am a big fan of Sci-Fi and that sort of stuff, and I love to hear, (though it saddens me, too) when people talk about UFO’s or Alien life. They are just so full of hope that there could be something bigger then themselves out there, that they would come down to earth and visit us, and give us their more superior knowledge. It’s amazing how close it comes to describing God and Christ, and yet they don’t want to believe that! They would rather trust in some small, pink fluffy creature from Alpha Centari to save them. And like the tv show X-Files would say, Yes, the Truth is Out there, but they are looking in the wrong direction. They don’t know where to look, to be honest. In fact, as the book of Romans tells us, the sinful man will NOT be looking for God. No wonder they are looking for ET.
Ok, so now I’m wondering how I started talking about the KJV and ended up talking about Aliens. Well, since I’m here, I might as well put forth my own theory about aliens. I personally think much of these so-called UFO sightings is just my coffee-hating brother-in-law Ray having fun with some of the super secret government aircraft that we don’t know about yet. (I know, I know, “I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you”) But these so-called abductions and sightings, some of them have some (I wouldn’t say “convincing”) interestingevidence. I personally think they are either brain delusions with psychosomatic results, or they could be demon activity. This is pure conjecture, and since I probably couldn’t write a paper about it for school anytime soon, there you go. In Scripture, Satan is refered to as a deciever, a trickerster, a tempter. He is called an Angel of Light. He was one of the most beautiful things that God created. He brings messages of vague truths that are filled with lies and deceit. Now, take a look at some of the things people say that these Aliens are telling them. They will say that the Aliens told them that mankind is good, that it can help itself, that it is heading for trouble and that WE have to work at doing things like Random Acts of Kindness, dismantling atomic bombs, hugging trees, and preserving forests for all those rare animals. The message that these “aliens” bring is in every way against God. And yet, there is a subtlety to it. The same goes for those so-called ghosts or messages from the Great Beyond (boooga booooga boooga!). They are often messages of hope, that after everyone dies, there is light and happiness and blah blah blah. That channeling stuff is creepy. I think it’s partly good guessing, deduction, and trickery. But sometimes I think they get a little too accurate, which I totally believe is demonic. Anyway, back to the KJV using Aliens. If the rapture were to happen today, I think ET wold get the blame for it. Beam me up, Scotty! I’ve achieved the level of higher conscienceness, and am now ready to be at peace among the Zarkonians from the Delta Quadrant!
It’s frightening what people will let themselve believe or what they will do just to get some sense of peace about the after life. And yet, the Real Truth is right here! (I am holding my Bibe in my coffee stained hands) The problem is, most of them won’t see it unless someone tells them. So what are we doing? Well, we are fighting about versions, music, and the size and shape of your pantaloons. (How bout that, I brought it back to my first topic. I bet you thought I couldn’t do it!) So, my final word: Don’t let the little issues become big issues. There is a time and place to discuss those things like versions and music. I think it’s important to know what your convictions are in those areas. But they should never never never be our sole obsessive topic. There are people slipping into eternity without Christ, listening to us bicker amongst ourselves. It’s time for a change!
Ok, so before I get to the point where I call for a revolution, I think I will stop writing now. Because I’m really supposed to be working right now. It’s ok, because my pet alien is watching the campus for me.

Good post! I totally agree with you. I find all the textual criticism stuff very interesting, but it’s not really terribly important in the bigger scheme of things (aka most of your major English translations are fine, ESV, HCSB, KJV, NASB, NIV, NKJV, etc.).
In my Sunday school class we just got done with a short series on being fishers of men, and one of the lessons was about how we often complicate the gospel. When we witness we sometimes try to add in all these things that we know are true (and some things that are just our personal opinion or preferences), but are not a part of the core gospel message. One of the key thoughts in that lesson was something like: if people choose to reject the gospel, let’s make sure they’re rejecting the gospel (as opposed to our “brand” of Christianity).
This, of course, led to great discussion of what exactly is the core content of the gospel that is necessary for salvation, but that’s another discussion for another time.
It’s moral insanity! When it comes to these “smaller” issues, like Calvinism, women-in-pantsism, or KJVism, the knowledge often only goes to puff up our heads. Off to write a post about 2 Peter 1…
okay so I wouldn’t call Calvinism one of the “smaller” issues but since I’m in the field of scholars I won’t say anymore about that. By the way I’m not a five point Calvanist…I’m a 4 1/2 point one!

Anywho…I agree with you Puppy! I personally use the ESV translation of the Bible. I came to decide on that version for my personal use after much prayer and many talks with my very smart husband. I use to be a KJV only clone…terrible I know! I swallowed all that mumbo-jumbo stuff about why its the only version God approves of and went off to college bright-eyed and ready to defend the only version fit for use. I was shocked by the amount of people who did not agree with me at college and I wondered how such herisy could be so ripe in this Christian areana! Then I took a class on the Bible and its orgins from a very great theologeon Dr. Cole. After that class I could not be a KJV only girl anymore…it just didn’t make logical sense. But then I felt lost…it felt like sinning to read any other translation, those other translations didn’t even sound like the Bible! I tried very hard to read my old KJV but I found I had lost all confidence in it. If something sounded funny I immeaditely wondered if it had been translated right. So like I said I prayed a lot and talked to my hubby, listened to other people’s opinions and read portions of the Bible from different translations, I settled on the ESV for my personal use because it was a good translation and it was a written in not so casual English so it made me feel comfortable. The ESV is a very good translation for those who came from a background like mine, I would highly recommend it!
okay so sometimes I feel guilty when I do certain things too Puppy that we were brainwashed into thinking was evil like having Santa Claus on our wrapping paper!
I mentioned Calvinism because it’s man’s attempt to title and systemize truth so that we can mostly just puff ourselves up. It’s certainly not really a small issue, but certainly smaller than we make it. If you don’t have moral excellence than what’s the point of knowledge?
